"Jesus, My Counselor"
Dr. Jack Klem, CBTS

I want to tell you about my counseling sessions from this week. Not the ones in which I was the counselor, but the ones in which I was the counselee.

You see I meet with the Lord just about everyday for counseling. It's great. He uses His Word and His Holy Spirit to so skillfully address the issues of my heart.

Well, I was having issues this week. More often than not my issues are self-imposed. If I don't go for counseling everyday, I can be anxious and stressed.

Saturday's session was the most exciting for me. The Lord used His Word from Psalm 74 to address my stress level.

This particular Psalm relives the darkness of 587 BC and the events that are recorded in 2 Kings 24-25. In this year Babylon ruined Jerusalem, killed its King, and deported its people from the city limits.

In the midst of this darkness the writer of the Psalm finds hope in the person and the ability of the Lord.

It is this hope that counseled me and brought relief to the stress of my anxious heart.

The first word of counsel to me came in Psalm 74:12-15.

Psalm 74:12-15
"But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth. It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert. It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers."
When I think about what has to be done I fret. When I stop and think about the power of God, I am reminded that the Lord can do anything. His power is His ability. My heart is relaxed when I trust Him and His power.

The second word of counsel came to me from Psalm 74:16-17.

Psalm 74:16-17
"The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter."
During this week I caught myself saying, I wish I had about two more weeks to get my work done.

The writer of Psalm 74 reminded me that the Lord is the sovereign over time. Since He controls it, He will use it in my life according to His decreed purposes.

When I think about how little time I have, I fret. My heart is relaxed when I trust His sovereign control of time.

The final word of counsel came to me from Psalm 74:19.

Psalm 74:19
"Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever."

In the final verses of the Psalm the writer appeals to the Lord's commitment of Himself to His people.

I am ashamed at how quickly I can doubt the Lord's goodness or forget His commitment to me. My heart is greatly relaxed when I meditate on the Lord?s unwavering loyalty to me, His redeemed child.

I thank the Lord for how He loves me and counsels me and I would recommend daily counseling sessions with the Lord in His Word for your issues of heart.
