"The Lord is My Shepherd"
Dr. Jack Klem
from a Selah Moment at Colonial Baptist Church, Sep. 7, 2008

The intimate declarations of the Lord to us in Psalm 23 are not only timeless; they are timely.

They speak to the issues of our heart and to the needs of our immediate circumstances.

The timeliness and the theology of the Lord’s tender words to us in Psalm 23 are especially highlighted in connection with Christ and with the Spirit in the New Testament.

If there are echoes of Psalm 23 in Revelation 7, I wonder if we could see other NT connections and write Psalm 23 from a NT perspective of the Trinity.

The Lord is my shepherd who has blessed me in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).

What could I possibly want?

He is the gate for me to the green pastures of eternal life (John 10:9).

Is there anything better?

He leads me to the deep and lasting living waters (John 4:10-11 / Revelation 7:17).

What could be more satisfying?

He is the God of all grace who restores me, who makes me strong, who makes me firm and steadfast in and through suffering (1 Peter 5:10).

Who else could do this in such an effective way?

He, along with the Spirit of Truth, guides me into all truth (John 16:13).

What a promise of protection!

He will never leave me; He will never forsake me (Hebrews 13:5); in fact the Spirit of Truth is in me (John 14:17); in fact since I am united with Christ I am comforted with His love (Phil 2:1).

I am in Christ alone!

He destroyed my last enemy, death in his resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:26; 55-57).

What could I genuinely fear?

He makes me overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).

What could defeat me with discouragement?

His power has given me everything that I need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).

The Lord, the Triuine God is my Shepherd!
