"The Humility of Christ"
Greg Jacob, CBC Deacon
from a Selah Moment at Colonial Baptist Church, Oct. 12, 2008

We have been worshiping through songs about the Redeemer. How He ransomed us.  How He is our only Savior.  How He owns us.  How we stand safely in His faithfulness.  How He carries us on eagle’s wings and waits for us at gates of gold.

It is the redemptive work of Jesus Christ that stands as a testimony to Him being the ultimate Humble Servant.

Based on the reliability of Scripture, we can embrace the humility of Christ, in who He is and what He has done, and we can obey the Bible’s requirement for a life changing response from those of us who call ourselves Christians.

Because Christ chose a humble birth, (Luke 2:7), humble life circumstances as the son of a carpenter (Matthew 13:55), and a humble life of poverty (2 Cor. 8:9), I will stop drawing my self esteem from the job I have, the finances I am entrusted with and my station in life.  Instead I will join with Paul and define who I am by my relationship with Christ (Phil 3:7-8) and I will put my confidence in Christ.

Because Christ humbled himself by associating with the despised of the world (Matt 9:12),  I will offer hospitality to those who cannot return it and I will care for the strangers, the needy, prisoners and widows.

Because Christ humbled himself by always submitting to the Father’s will (John 5:30, 6:38, 8:29)  I will stop imposing my will on those around me. I will humbly serve my family and help them mature spiritually through unconditional love.  I will stop being overly sensitive, if they hesitate with my efforts and I will purse reading the bible and praying with them on a daily basis.

Because of Christ’s submission to the Father, I will submit to the will of the authorities God has placed in my life; my parents, my boss, the government and I will stop complaining about wrongly perceived limits from them.

Because Christ humbled himself by washing His disciples' feet (John 13:5), even when one of them was his enemy, I will stop worrying about how others treat me and I will be quick to confess my sins to God and maintain a humble relationship with Him.

As we consider our Redeemer this morning let me remind you of who we are talking about–

Jesus Christ is the Eternal God (Rev 1:8) - who existed before the foundation of the world (John 17:24) and who we will worship forever (Rev 1:18)

Jesus is the Creator. Christ is not only the One through whom all things were made (John1:3), but also the One by whom they continue to exist. (Col 1:17)

Jesus Christ is exalted above everything! (Phil 2:9-11)

Yet He is the One who gave the ultimate expression of humility as recorded in Phil 2.  He starts out in verse 6 by freely giving up all the rights and privileges of His Divinity and He ends up in verse 8, humbling himself in obedience to the Father in His death on the cross.

Because Jesus chose this ultimate humiliation, I will stop demanding my rights across all my relationships. I will be quick to forgive others and I will seek reconciliation with those I have offended.

Jesus told His disciples in Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did notcome to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

This is our Redeemer.  Let us worship Him as our Humble Servant King.  Let us be changed because of our relationship with Him.  This morning let Jesus wash your feet by confessing the sin that is blocking your fellowship with Him.  Walk with God through His Spirit whom he has placed inside you and kill pride by embracing the humility of Christ.
